This publication provides a summary of the proceedings of the public session of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Canada, held to mark the 250th anniversary of Hryhorii Skovoroda's birth.
In the first paper, Kachur argues that Skovoroda should be interpreted as a theologian rather than a philosopher, given the strong influence of Erasmus of Rotterdam on him.
In the second paper, Pohorilyi contends that, due to changes in language and style of philosophizing, Skovoroda's legacy was forgotten because of its symbolic character. The paper also outlines the symbolism in Skovoroda's works.
In the third paper, Yaroslav Slavutych examines language and pronunciation in Skovoroda's works. The decline of the Ukrainian language during Skovoroda's time left its mark on his body of work, which researchers later evaluated in different ways. The author concludes that Skovoroda wrote in the Old Ukrainian literary language of the final period of its existence. It was also noted that the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine reprints Skovoroda's works not from manuscripts, but from Russified editions.
