The article is an analysis of Yuliia Soroka's monograph Ours, Strangers, Different: A Socio-Cultural Perspective on the Perception of the Other. Liudmyla Males examines a socio-psychological approach to understanding the phenomenon of the Other, one that differs from classical philosophical treatments of this problem. The article also addresses contemporary Ukrainian social issues: xenophobia, social inequality, and the apoliticism of the majority of the population. It substantiates the constructive function of studying the Other for social development and community self-knowledge. A number of examples are provided demonstrating the significance of understanding otherness in various spheres of modern human life.
