Tomasz Stryjek analyzes two books in his article: Passions for Nationalism: An Old Story in a New Way. Essays by Yaroslav Hrytsak and Histories of Historians: Faces and Images of Ukrainian Historiography of the Twentieth Century by Andrii Portnov. The text was written in 2011 and translated from Polish (with abridgements) by Dzvinka Matiiash. The context for the analysis of both publications is the political and cultural situation in Ukraine in 2011, marked by a decline in productivity in the humanities. This publication is the first part of Stryjek's full text and contains the introduction and the section devoted to Hrytsak.
