The article is a preface to translations of fragments from the works of Søren Kierkegaard. The author points out that Kierkegaard is regarded as a predecessor not only by existentialists, but also by Protestant theologians (adherents of "dialectical theology"), left-wing Catholics, and representatives of French personalism.
Kierkegaard's philosophy is difficult to separate from "poetics," which the author explains by the philosopher's focus not so much on knowing the truth as on being in the truth. The basis of his reflections is irony, which is the central aesthetic principle of his poetics. However, as the author notes, for Kierkegaard irony is at the same time a serious spiritual illness that must be overcome by turning to one's own life.
