This article is dedicated to the discussion surrounding Viktor Yushchenko's decision to award Stepan Bandera the title of Hero of Ukraine. The article provides a historical overview of the events of the twentieth century related to the figure of Stepan Bandera in the context of the struggle against Polish rule and the Stalinist regime. The rehabilitation of Bandera's image is consistent with the rejection of Stalin's legacy. However, the author emphasises that Stalin and Bandera were both guided by the principle that political transformations justify violence. Timothy Snyder emphasises that this policy of Yushchenko's casts a shadow over his presidency.
