Synopsis

The article examines the movement for the creation of the Ukrainian Catholic Patriarchate as an important psychological and political phenomenon in Ukrainian society. The author traces the history of the patriarchal movement and its religious, national, and socio-political aspects. Particular attention is paid to the problems of internal unity, attitudes toward authority, and the Ukrainian community's capacity for self-organization. The movement for the Patriarchate emerges as a kind of socio-political "experiment" that makes it possible to identify typical patterns of behavior among particular social groups, their leaders, and institutions.

Bohdan Tsymbalistyi analyzes how the conflicts surrounding the Patriarchate revealed deeper problems in Ukrainian civic life: disunity, struggles for influence, and insufficient respect for the community's own institutional authority. The author links these problems to the broader question of Ukrainian state-building and society's capacity for joint action.

The conclusions argue for the need to put self-governing of the Ukrainian Catholic Church into practice. It should become the basis of the Church's internal unity, centralized leadership, and the further consolidation of the Patriarchate.
