Synopsis

The second volume of Dmytro Chyzhevskyi's Philosophical Works, Between Intellect and Culture: Studies in the History of Ukrainian Philosophy, presents an integrated picture of the development of Ukrainian philosophical thought in its connection with cultural, historical, religious, and literary processes. Chyzhevskyi treats the Ukrainian intellectual tradition as a component of the European spiritual space. He traces the reception of ancient and Western European philosophy in Ukraine from the era of Kyivan Rus' to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Considerable attention is given to cultural and historical epochs, the phenomenon of the Ukrainian Baroque, the philosophical ideas of Ivan Vyshenskyi, and the influence of Schelling's philosophy. The philosophical and historiosophical aspects of Taras Shevchenko's work are examined separately. Individual studies are devoted to Panteleimon Kulish as a representative of the Ukrainian "philosophy of the heart," to Viacheslav Lypynskyi as a philosopher of history, and to Volodymyr Vernadskyi in the context of problems of natural philosophy.

Chyzhevskyi's works demonstrate the close connection between philosophy, literature, religion, and national culture. They outline the main stages in the formation of the Ukrainian worldview and intellectual tradition.
