Synopsis

The second volume of the collective monograph History of Philosophy in Ukraine examines the development of philosophical thought in Ukraine throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period marked by the decline of the feudal order and the emergence of capitalist relations. The study focuses on the leading philosophical and sociopolitical currents of the era, their interaction with historical and social processes, and the struggle between idealism and materialism.

The authors analyze religious-idealist philosophy, Enlightenment thought of the first half of the nineteenth century, materialist ideas in philosophy and the natural sciences, as well as the philosophical and sociological views of the Decembrists and members of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood. Particular attention is paid to the worldview underlying the work of T. Shevchenko, O. Potebnia, M. Drahomanov, I. Franko, and Lesia Ukrainka, as well as to the philosophical and sociological conceptions of Ukrainian revolutionary democrats.

A substantial part of the work is devoted to the dissemination of Marxist philosophy in Ukraine. It traces the paths of its penetration, its reception in Ukrainian literature and public thought, the formation of an organized movement for Marxist ideology, and the activity of V. I. Lenin and his followers.

The publication presents the history of Ukrainian philosophical thought through the lens of Marxist-Leninist methodology, while at the same time recording a broad range of philosophical, sociological, ethical, aesthetic, and worldview-related problems in the intellectual history of Ukraine in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
