Synopsis

The article examines the phenomenon of Google through the prism of its success story and the fundamental principles on which the company operates. Based on an analysis of its advertising strategy, the author argues that Google’s main principle, providing universal access to information, cannot in fact be regarded as a manifestation of the public good. The price of free information is the violation of intellectual property rights and users’ privacy. The article raises the question of whether such an exchange of rights to information is adequate and whether its social normalization is justified.
