gender studies, critical theory, psychoanalysisSynopsis
The article is based on a lecture delivered in 2011 at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The author examines the theoretical foundations, genesis, and problems of contemporary gender studies. The thesis that gender binarity and heterosexual behavior are natural is called into question. Male homoeroticism is interpreted as a logical consequence of the unequal treatment of femininity and masculinity in patriarchal societies. The influence of the works of Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, and Judith Butler on the formation of gender studies is traced in chronological order. Particular attention is paid to the role of psychoanalysis as a symbolic language without which a philosophical understanding of gender issues is impossible. The author criticizes the dominance of Euro-American discourse in gender studies and stresses the need for their decolonization.
