The article offers the reflection on the relationship between the virtual and real worlds. It traces the development of the internet, from the emergence of the technology and the naive vision of cyberspace as a world of equality and freedom to today’s social networks as instruments of political manipulation. Using Facebook as an example, the author substantiates the thesis that online communities are real. She shows how virtual communication has broadened the understanding of friendship. Drawing on Jacques Lacan’s terminology, she describes the virtual as the Symbolic, paying particular attention to the process of a user’s psychological identification with their own internet avatar.
