History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science (trans. from Eng. by Mykhailo Pavlyk): Lviv, Udilova Printing House, 1904, 272 p.
Synopsis
A work by the American thinker John Draper devoted to the study of the relationship between science and religion. The author identifies the earliest stages in the development of both fields, which were already accompanied by a conflict that remains relevant today. As examples of open struggle, he cites the persecution of astronomers and the church’s persistent rejection of scientific achievements. He also identifies the points of greatest disagreement, such as questions of cosmology and the origin and age of the human species. However, the focus of the work is not only on the obvious opposition but also on the mutual influence of science and religion and the changes both undergo under that influence. The concluding chapter deals with the crisis of religion. The author concludes that it is necessary to promote science and education and to reduce the authority of religion.
