The Ukrainian Question in the European Context: Vienna, Promin, 1905, 31 p.
Keywords:
imperialism, culture, nationSynopsis
The work is a collection of positions expressed by European journalists, politicians, and professors on the problem of the oppression of Ukrainian culture under Russian imperial policy. The collection opens with responses to a survey in the journal Ruthenische Revue concerning the Ems Decree, in which respondents firmly condemn the suppression of the Ukrainian language, identity, and culture. The compiler, Vasyl Yavorskyi, analyzes the responses, demonstrating the importance of European public opinion for initiating a discussion on the development of national culture. He argues that international awareness and intellectual solidarity are decisive for advancing the Ukrainian cause, and therefore the widest possible publicity and drawing other states’ attention to the situation in Ukraine are necessary.
