Synopsis

A translation of selected political and philosophical notes written by Antonio Gramsci in 1929–1935 during his imprisonment by the fascist regime. The author criticizes the mechanistic economic determinism of orthodox Marxists. He develops the concept of hegemony introduced in the essay “Some Aspects of the Southern Question,” treating class struggle as a struggle of hegemonies. An attempt is made to rethink the traditional view of base and superstructure by shifting the focus to educational activity. The author assigns the task of mobilizing the working class to “organic intellectuals,” contrasting them with traditional intellectuals who serve the interests of the ruling strata.
