Synopsis

The article is a review of Michel Onfray’s Atheist Manifesto (Traité d’athéologie), translated into Ukrainian in 2010. The author considers the book in the context of the growing demand among Western audiences for philosophical, journalistic, and popular science literature of an anticlerical orientation. According to him, Onfray’s position contrasts with most contemporary atheist thought, represented mainly by rationalists. The author sees the historical-philosophical leitmotif of Onfray’s works in the division of philosophy into two branches: the first comprises followers of Plato, the second libertarian marginal thinkers, from Diogenes of Sinope to Gilles Deleuze. It is shown that for Onfray, identifying with a particular philosophical tradition is inseparable from adopting the corresponding way of life. Likewise, to explain the origin of religions, Onfray turns to existential and bodily experiences. It is emphasized that secularization is impossible without going beyond the epistemic frame inherited from the Abrahamic religions.
