The article is a translation of a text by José Carlos Mariátegui. The author reflects on the crisis caused by the lack of myth in the bourgeois worldview. In his words, rationalism and scientific knowledge have displaced religious consciousness without offering alternatives of equal explanatory power. The attempts of a number of intellectuals to appeal to the mythological pathos of the past in the industrialized age are regarded as doomed to failure. The author considers the proletarian masses to be the modern heirs of the religious worldview. It is argued that the religious, mystical character of socialism is what ensures its revolutionary potential.
