From Ukraine to Ukrainy, or the Language of politics in translation In Krityka, No. 9 (71), 2003, pp. 14-15.

The article examines the Polish translation of Mykola Riabchyk's work From Little Russia to Ukraine [Pol.: Od Małorosji do Ukrainy]. The scholar substantiates the thesis about the ethnocentric nature of the text, despite the Ukrainian origin of the translator. The argument is based on the analysis of terminological transformations: the concepts of nationalism and socialism in the translation are replaced by more neutral and acceptable equivalents for the Polish reader – folk. Special attention is paid to phonetic inaccuracies in the nominal index, which, in the author's opinion, distance the reader from Ukrainian personalities. As a result, the translation appears not only as a linguistic, but also as an ideologically marked phenomenon.
