Apology of Socrates.: (Translated from the Greek by Volodymyr Kmitsykevych): Kyiv - Leipzig, Ukraiinska nakladnya, 1921, 93 pp.
Synopsis
The Ukrainian translation of Plato's Apology of Socrates by Ukrainian lexicographer, translator, and gymnasium teacher of classical philology Volodymyr Kmitsykevych.
The first edition was published in 1903: Plato (1903). The Defense of Socrates (V. Kmitsykevych, trans. and explanation): Drukarnya Styfjogo.
This page presents the second edition of the translation, revised by Kmiecikiewicz after receiving critical responses to the first edition.
There is uncertainty about the year of publication of the second edition of the translation. Vyacheslav Zaikin, the author of a 1923 review of this translation, states that the translation was published in 1923. However, it should be noted that the book itself does not allow us to establish the exact year of its publication, so it could be, for example, a reprint. Modern researchers (e.g., Yosyp Kobiv) provide information that the second edition presented here was published in 1921.
The issue of the language from which Kmitsykevych’s translations were made is controversial. There are different accounts that the translation was made either from Ancient Greek (e.g., by Vyacheslav Zaiikyn, Josyp Kobiv) or from Latin (e.g., by Josyp Dzendzelivskyi). In the title of the work on this page, we follow Kobiv's interpretation, but recognize the need for modern collective expertise to establish a certain solution to this problem.
