Synopsis

The article analyzes Hans-Georg Gadamer's (1900-2002) philosophical hermeneutics with an emphasis on his dialogical approach to interpretation. Havryliv analyzes Gadamer's concept of conversation as a central element of the hermeneutic process, which arises from the structure of Socratic dialogue and encompasses the interaction of the subject with the text, tradition, and other interpreters. Karl-Otto Apel's criticism of this concept and Gadamer's response to it are analyzed separately. Considerable attention is paid to Gadamer's appeal to poetry, in particular the work of Paul Celan, as a way of approaching the inexpressible. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that philosophical hermeneutics can serve as a methodology for the humanities.
