Synopsis

Pavlo Kutuiev's article discusses the post-development school of thought and one of its founders, Arturo Escobar. The author compares post-development theory with Immanuel Wallerstein's world-systems analysis. It is noted that these two philosophers come to similar conclusions in different ways. While world-systems analysis is based on the Trotskyist version of neo-Marxism, post-development theory appeals to Michel Foucault's discourse theory. Post-development is seen as a reaction to the political practices of modernization in third world countries. The main goal of post-development theory is to explain how the discourse of development constitutes the reality of the people in these countries. The author warns against the uncritical idealization of pre-capitalist non-Western economies, which, in his opinion, can lead to the apology of traditionalism.
