The article examines Ukrainian literature under the conditions of Soviet totalitarianism, which is portrayed as a system of rigid ideological control – an inquisition. Drawing on the work of Ivan Koshelivets, the author analyzes the mass repressions against writers, the annihilation of literary generations, and the subordination of creative work to party dogma. Tarnavsky outlines various models of behavior among artists – most notably Pavlo Tychyna and Maksym Rylskyi – and emphasizes the pervasiveness of falsehood in Socialist Realist literature. Attention is also drawn to the emergence of a new generation of writers seeking to restore authenticity and creative freedom. In conclusion, the author argues that despite the repressions, Ukrainian literature retains its potential for revival.
